The 29th District is a strip of counties along the southern edge of the state. This is largely rural and small town territory, although the district has expanded to include some of the southern suburbs of Rochester. The district is on balance fairly Republican, having given George W. Bush 56 percent of the vote in 2004 and John McCain 51 percent in 2008.
The district elected Republican Randy Kuhl in 2004. Kuhl proved a weak incumbent, winning close elections in 2004 and 2006. In 2008 he was felled by Democrat Eric Massa, a onetime aide to Wesley Clark.
But Massa had problems of his own, and unexpectedly resigned in the middle of the health care debate. This resulted in an open race in the district. Democrats have nominated Afghan War veteran Matt Zeller, while Republicans have rallied behind Corning Mayor Tom Reed.
